Freelance platforms in Turkey compared: Bionluk, Upwork, Freelancer.com, Useme and Serbest İş (2026)
Published: 09.10.2026
Freelance platforms look alike at first glance, but they differ in a few ways that matter: who they are built for (local or global clients), which language you work in, whether they sell ready-made services or collect bids on projects, where the money waits while the work is done, and how much is deducted along the way. This guide compares four platforms that people in Turkey often use with our own platform, Serbest İş (serbestis.com), using the same questions for each.
A disclosure up front: we build Serbest İş, so we are not a neutral party. For the other platforms we only repeat what their own official pages say. Fees change, so check the current figures on each platform's site before you sign up.
Who each platform suits
Bionluk
A Turkish-language marketplace focused on Turkey. Its core format is the ready-made service: a freelancer lists an offer ("I will do X") and buyers pick one and place an order. According to its help pages, the payment for an order is held in the "Bionluk Pool" until the work is delivered and the buyer approves it. Opening a freelancer account carries a one-off fee (149.90 TL as of October 2026, according to the platform's help page), and a service fee is also charged on orders; check the platform's own pages for the current rate.
Upwork
A global platform where work happens in English and payments are in foreign currency. Clients post jobs and freelancers send proposals; there is also a catalog of ready-made projects. Upwork charges both sides. As of October 2026, according to its help center, the freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is shown before you submit a proposal, while clients on the free Basic plan pay a marketplace fee of up to 7.99% on payments to freelancers.
Freelancer.com
Also global and English-speaking, built around bidding: the client posts a project for free, compares bids and awards one. Payments go through "Milestone Payments": the client deposits the money before work begins and releases it on approval. As of October 2026, according to its fees page, fixed-price projects cost the client 3% (minimum USD 3) and the freelancer 10% (minimum USD 5); on hourly work the rates apply to each payment.
Useme
Useme's distinguishing feature is invoicing: freelancers without a registered business can invoice clients, including clients abroad, through the platform. The client pays Useme, which deducts its fee and transfers the rest to the freelancer. As of October 2026, according to its help center, the fee is 4.99% of the invoice (with a minimum and a maximum), or you can choose a monthly subscription. It also has job listings and portfolios. Check whether your country and currency are supported, and how tax works for you, before you start.
Serbest İş
Turkish-first, with the site and member area also available in English, and rebuilt from scratch for its relaunch on 7 October 2026. There are two ways to work: a client posts a project for free and receives proposals priced per stage, or requests an expert's packaged service directly. There is no commission and the platform never holds the money. Nothing starts until both sides approve the stage plan, and the client pays the expert directly after approving each stage. Our team checks experts against their LinkedIn profiles, and verified experts carry a badge.

Comparison table
| Platform | Best known for | How payment works | Fees (October 2026) |

| Upwork | Global, English; proposals and a project catalog | Through the platform, with payment protection | Freelancer 0–15%; client up to 7.99% (Basic plan) |

| Useme | Invoicing without a company, clients abroad | Client pays Useme, which transfers the rest | 4.99% per invoice (min/max) or a monthly subscription |
| Serbest İş | Turkish-first; staged projects and packaged services | Paid directly to the expert per approved stage; no escrow | Free, no commission |
Payments and fees: two basic models
Most marketplaces use escrow: the client pays the platform first and the money moves to the freelancer once the work is approved. That is reassuring when you are working with a stranger, but it usually comes with a fee on one or both sides, and the money waits on the platform for a while.
The other model is direct payment: the platform brings people together and keeps a record of the process, while the money moves between the two parties. Serbest İş combines this with stages: the client never pays for the whole job up front, and the expert starts getting paid long before the end. Instead of one large payment, the risk is split into small pieces. We explain the approach in our post on staged payments.
When Serbest İş is a good fit
- You want a commission-free platform: every lira you pay goes to the person doing the work.
- You want to split the job into stages: the project wizard can use AI to suggest a title, a description and stages with estimated price ranges, and you have the final say.
- You prefer to work in Turkish with an expert in Turkey.
- As an expert, you want to keep all your earnings and present your service with clear packages, extras and steps.
- You want fewer bad-faith listings: new projects and services are checked for spam, scams and attempts to move work off the platform before they go live.
When it may not be
- You want the payment held safely by the platform. Serbest İş does not hold money, so there is no escrow and no refund through the platform. Small stages and written approvals reduce the risk, but the parties pay each other directly.
- You want lots of listings and reviews right away. We have only just relaunched and are welcoming our first experts and clients now, so the choice in each category is not yet as wide as on the big marketplaces.
- Your goal is international clients paying in foreign currency; global platforms reach a much larger audience.
Many freelancers and clients use more than one platform. These sites are less substitutes for each other than tools for different needs.
FAQ
Which freelance platforms are most used in Turkey?
Bionluk is common for Turkish-language, local work, while Upwork and Freelancer.com are widely used for international clients. Useme stands out for invoicing, and Serbest İş for a commission-free, pay-per-stage model.
How does Serbest İş differ from Bionluk?
Serbest İş has no membership fee and no commission, and money never waits on the platform: the client pays the expert directly after each approved stage. You can request a packaged service or post a project and collect proposals. The trade-off is that there is no escrow, and the platform is new.
Is a commission-free platform safe?
Safety depends on how payment works and how much of the process is on record. On Serbest İş both sides approve the stage plan, revision requests require a written note, reviews are only possible after a stage has been paid, and experts are checked against their LinkedIn profiles. We still recommend starting with a small first stage.
How do I hire a freelancer?
Write down what you need, your budget range and your deadline, split the job into stages and compare a few proposals. On Serbest İş you can post a project for free or browse experts and request a service directly.
Do platform fees change?
Yes. The figures here are what each platform's own pages said in October 2026. Always check the current fee on the platform's site before you sign up or start your first job.
